Naran, June 19, 2013:Coca-Cola Pakistan in collaboration with WWF- Pakistan organized a clean-up drive to clean the most visited tourist site of Pakistan, Lake Saif-ul-Mulook.The activity comprised of people of all ages and walks of life. More than 80 people volunteered to partake in the clean-up drive of Lake Saif-ul-Malook. The clean-up drive is part of Coca-Cola & WWF’s
ongoing project titled “Environment Conservation Project, Ayubia” which commenced in 2009, and since then the project has been scaled up every year.

A diverse group of people consisting of students & teachers from the local communities, Coca-Cola and WWF employees cleaned up the areas surrounding Saif-ul-Malook. Renowned for its immense scenic beauty, the lake remains one of the most widely visited tourist destination of the country; resultantly due to the heavy traffic of tourists the lake surrounding gets heavily littered, which in turn affects the biodiversity and contaminates the water resource. The premise of the activity is to foremost maintain the beauty of Saif-ul-Malook, and then raise awareness on environmental issues and Coca-Cola’s role in preserving environment for future generations. Through the activity a total of 567kgs of waste was collected and safely disposed of.

Whilst speaking about the activity, Rizwan U. Khan, General Manager, Coca-Cola Pakistan added “We continuously work to balance the water we use in our finished beverages by participating in such replenishment initiatives that support local communities and nature. Coca-Cola also carried out this activity in October 2009, this year thetotal litter collected was 567kgs.The WWF & Coca-Cola partnership is transforming the way we think and act about the environment”.

The partnership between Coca-Cola Pakistan and WWF is an extensive environment conservation project with an investment of US$ 600,000. The salient features of the project includes:watershed management, the slope stabilization, afforestation, rainwater harvesting, environmental education at schools and community level, alternate energy sources introduction (solar water heaters, fuel efficient stoves, and roof insulation). Furthermore, it provides numerous job opportunities to the local communities through capacity building of communities in plant nurseries establishment, women vocational center establishment, ecotourism guides training. More than 40,000 trees are planted on communal lands around the Ayubia National park.
