KARACHI: The Pakistan Business Council (PBC) is all set to organise the second event of Pakistan Economic Forum (PEF) to give expert advocacy to the next government for the betterment of the socio-economy situation of the country through building conducive environment for the business.

This was stated by PBC CEO Kamran Y Mirza told Daily Times on Tuesday. He said that all political parties are keen to bring reform in energy sector, tax reforms, governance and law and order which caused optimism for the foreign and local investors to expand their business in Pakistan.

We believe that political parties will implement their manifestoes, which are good for the road to economic recovery of the country although business leaders under the platform of PBC are ready to assist them in every area of expertise, he added.

Mirza further said that they had set certain benchmarks on economy, education, macro-economic stability, social protection and water but all of these areas could not be developed as per strategy in the last political regime.

These areas should be given priority by any political party, which comes into power for sustainable gross domestic product growth and their ripple effect on the grass root level and masses, he added. Pakistan is, no doubt, blessed with unlimited natural resources. Its geo-strategic location is very ideal but we need to utilise all of them to become prosperous and developed, said Mirza.

Though we have not achieved economic growth in the past few years due to energy crisis, global economic scenario and terrorism issues but the country’s new leadership must focus on future and mitigate the issues of ailing economy, he added.

Mirza further said in the past five years, everything related to economy has become worse but I have seen some positive change as well which is evident from the completion of democratic process and awareness among the masses regarding their rights. The political leadership should express its commitment whatever it pledges with masses in true letter and spirit when it comes into power and gets the country out of crisis.

Mirza pointed out that Pakistan has immense potential to attract foreign investment and new business in the future due to its investment-friendly policies. However the government should facilitate investors and win their confidence for resilience in the economy.

Pakistan’s factors are not functioning due to energy crisis including power and gas shortage but they could be run again with supplies of utilities hence jobs, exports and revenues could be generated easily, he added.

PBC being a representative body of 41 public and private companies are keen to invest and expand their business in Pakistan so they are always leading on the front to provide advocacy and advisory to the policymakers. staff report
