Karachi, 14th April 2011: After the overwhelming response to Sprite Cricket Next in 2010, Sprite has now launched Sprite Cricket Next 2011 version. Spread across 13 cities, the technology driven campaign aims to unearth hidden talent and pick the best “Gulli” (street) cricketers Pakistan has to offer.

Infused with state-of-the-art technology, that previously was only available to professionals of the sport, street cricketers from across Pakistan will get a chance to prove their mettle and demonstrate their abilities. This is an opportunity for street cricketers to gauge their batting ability through wagon wheels and action replays, which generate real time statistics such as runs made per over and areas where their shots have travelled. Bowlers will also have the incentive of knowing the quality of their performance, as information on their bowling speed and accuracy of delivery through pitch maps and speed guns is made readily available.

Expressing his views on the launch of Sprite Cricket Next 2011, Rizwan U. Khan, General Manager Coca-Cola Export Corporation Pakistan and Afghanistan said, “The passion that gulli cricketers’ possess for the game is unparalled in Pakistan. Whether it is day or night, sweltering heat or torrential rain, you will always find gulli cricketers taking to the streets. Through Sprite Cricket Next, we are providing a technology infused competitive environment, which will provide the potential superstars of tomorrow an outlet to showcase their talent and gain recognition amongst their cricketing peers.”

Last year’s competition was based on a one on one format, where gulli cricketers competed against each other for valuable cash prizes and recognition. This time around, the format has been revised on popular request, with teams of 4 players contending with each other to be crowned the first ever National Gulli Cricket champions of Pakistan.

Gulli cricket has always been regarded as the nursery for raw cricket talent and has been the source for many cricket stars that have gone on to represent our nation in the highest level of the sport. In cricketing circles, the emergence of one “world beating” Pakistani fast bowler after the next has often been attributed to street cricket, which is typically played with plastic tape wrapped tennis balls.

Sprite Cricket Next is yet another Coke initiative to engage and promote healthy activities amongst the youth. Such activities not only promote our sporting culture but also develop a sense of community in Pakistani youth, who have the potential to be the superstars of tomorrow. Initiatives such as Sprite Cricket Next are based on Coca-Cola’s Live Positively philosophy.
