Image via WikipediaKarachi, April 25, 2011: A local recycling company has recently initiated the production of unique Poly-Al (polyethylene and aluminum) fabrication sheets, named as Tuff Boards, which are completely manufactured from used Tetra Pak beverage cartons. Tuff Boards have the necessary stiffness to be used as roofing sheets and are designed to replace the use of traditional wooden, metal and medium-density fiber-board sheets owing to their low cost and strength.
The invention of Tuff Board is a major breakthrough in the recycling sector of Pakistan as previously only the paperboard
obtained from used cartons was being recycled, for manufacturing pulp and paper products. Now the aluminum and polyethylene layers of a Tetra Pak carton are also being recycled, to make the Tuff Board fabrication sheet. This sheet costing less than Rs 45 per square feet only, offers an economical roofing solution for a wide range of applications. Within the first month of its operations the recycling company has already received a strong response from dairy farms, new plants, offices and housing complexes. Sheds made out of Tuff Boards are easy to install, light weight and are heat and water resistant.
Recycling is a major environmental pillar with Tetra Pak globally. In 2010 over 30 billion of Tetra Pak’s cartons were recycled worldwide. The increase in the amount of cartons being recycled has been over a billion cartons a year. The company actively supports activities to increase access to recycling, and cooperates with civil society, industry, and governments in this regard. It also assists paper manufacturing mills around the world with technical expertise to carry out trials and verify the feasibility of recycling cartons at their sites. On average over 40 such trials have been performed every year since 2002.
Following the global lead, Tetra Pak Pakistan is also driving the recycling of used beverage cartons locally and by the end of 2010, already about 15% of used cartons are being recycled through formal initiatives, whereas a huge quantity is also recycled in the informal sector with collection of used cartons being done by rag-pickers and others. Tetra Pak Pakistan’s recycling initiatives have been duly recognized internationally and nationally, with the company winning the Environmental Excellence Award at the prestigious Asian CSR Awards in 2009 for their Proud Pakistanis Recycle Campaign, and being awarded the Consumer Choice Award recently by the Consumer Association of Pakistan.
