Karachi, February 07, 2011: Coca-Cola, the world’s largest beverage company, has joined hands with International Relief & Development (IRD), a US based non for profit currently focusing on the recovery of small-holder farmers in the severely flood damaged District of Muzaffargarh in southern Punjab. IRD under the support of Coca-Cola will provide essential input package for the recovery of sugarcane crop, the overall goal of the project is to ensure the improved livelihood and food security for vulnerable households. This brings the total commitment of The Coca-Cola Company for flood relief & rehabilitation efforts to $1million.

Speaking about the need for the Small Farmers’ Recovery Project, Fahad Qadir, PAC Manager of Coca-Cola Pakistan, stated that Coca-Cola will maintain its support to the flood affected during the Early Recovery and Rehabilitation phases as well, he reiterates that the humanitarian response for the victims of floods shall not be not be considered as a “closed chapter”. IRD’s Country Director, Sajjad Imran added that for the poor rural flood affected the best respite is the Agriculture Recovery, the green farms are like a wave of fresh blood for poor farmers. IRD and Coca-Cola will focus on poorest of the poor farmers for the recovery of their subsistence farming.

The project will provide critically needed agricultural inputs like seed, fertilizer and tools to the farmers for their rehabilitation. The Cash for Work (CFW) schemes will employ 3,500 farmers to clean and repair watercourses and tertiary irrigation canals, which are presently congested with silt and debris and have collapsed retaining walls, preventing the flow of water to farmer fields. Further the project will support local communities in cleaning the debris in the main streets, farm to village roads, farm to market roads and restoration of bridges (pulleys).

Coca-Cola actively participated in providing relief across Pakistan in different flood affected areas. This included supply of food items, bottled drinking water and bedding and tents for shelter, and the operation of medical camps.
