Karachi, November 01, 2010: Tetra Pak, world’s leading food processing and packaging company, won laurels for the country at the recently held Asian CSR Awards 2010 in Kuala Lumpur by winning the Excellence Award in the Poverty Alleviation category. The prestigious Award was given for Tetra Pak’s entry entitled Dairy Hub: A Community Dairy Development Programme, described as a ‘significant achievement’ by the organizers, the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Philippines. This was the second time for Tetra Pak to participate in the Asian CSR Awards programme and to win an award. In 2009 Tetra Pak Pakistan won the CSR Award in the Environmental Excellence category for its used cartons recycling initiative. In the 5 categories covered by the Asian CSR Awards, a total of 141 entries from 99 companies in 15 countries were received. In a message to Tetra Pak, the organizers stated, “the judges had a very difficult time evaluating the excellent entries. Many of the entries, like yours, were impressive. In the end, the judges made some difficult decisions. Being selected as an excellence awardee is recognition that your entry was among the best in Poverty Alleviation category in the region.”
“We are happy to receive this award. We believe that with the help of our customers we will make this project play a vital role in poverty alleviation and in improving the quality of life of the small dairy farmers,” remarks Azhar Ali Syed, Managing Director Tetra Pak Pakistan.
The Excellence Award was received by Kashif Bhatti, Marketing Director of Tetra Pak Pakistan from the Guest of Honour, YABhg Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Speaking about Tetra Pak winning the award, Kashif Bhatti stated, “The dairy sector is a vital sector of Pakistan’s economy, with millions of people dependent on it. This is a critical social issue that Tetra Pak is well equipped to address, with its technology-based global expertise of the dairy industry. The Dairy Hub Programme assists in achieving both food security and poverty alleviation, through smallholder dairy development. It seeks to improve and diversify livelihoods, create regular income and employment, and is likely to reduce urban migration. It offers opportunities for empowerment, especially of women.”
The Dairy Hub is a one-herd concept that encompasses approximately 800 small-holder farmers from 20 villages located within 15-20 kilometers radius into one Dairy Hub. The Hub concentrates on breed, feed, animal diseases, knowledge and management skills of farmers. Village Milk Collection points (VMCs) are set up by milk processing companies.
