Coca-Cola doubles flood relief pledge to US $ 1.0 million

Karachi, August 27, 2010: Coca-Cola has doubled its flood relief pledge to 1.0 million dollars from the already earmarked sum of US $ 500,000.00, as part of the overall relief efforts for the families that have been badly affected by the devastating floods in the country. A large portion of the additional funds will be used for rehabilitation activities of the flood affectees who will direly need infrastructure support once the flood waters recede. 

Coca-Cola has so far delivered approximately 2.0 million litres of water, through Government of Punjab. Together with the Sindh Government, and the local community, the Company has distributed food items to over 1,700 displaced families while through its partners, Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation, Coca-Cola is operating manual chair lifts to transfer people still stuck in mountainous areas. 

Expressing his views, Rizwan U. Khan, Country Manager for Pakistan and Afghanistan, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation said, “We have realized that the magnitude of the catastrophe is massive and needs more support from every potential donor on an urgent basis. We believe that this huge devastation demands a compassionate and humane response that should go beyond corporate social responsibility. Coca-Cola’s contribution, in this context, is a token of our support to our brethren in this time of need to help alleviate their suffering.” 

Coca-Cola has provided 700 water proof tents to WWF, Pani Pakistan, Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) & Pakistan Army, along-with mattresses and blankets and more than 10,000 kg rice, 40,000 kg flour, lentils, cooking oil and dry milk has been provided at relief camps all across Pakistan. 
With Coca-Cola’s donation, the PRCS is operating medical camps and providing food and shelter to people in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) while through the platform of American Business Forum, the Company has collected and distributed food items for over 600 families in Punjab. Coca-Cola is also supporting National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) with relief efforts across the country.
